What Is Meningitis?

Meningitis is a serious inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can progress quickly and requires immediate medical itervention.

Understanding Meningitis

Every second counts

Meningitis is an inflammation of the protective membranes—called the meninges—that surround the brain and spinal cord. This inflammation is most often caused by a viral or bacterial infection, but can also result from other conditions such as fungal infections, certain medications, or underlying diseases.

Because the brain and spinal cord control essential functions throughout the body, inflammation in this area can quickly become dangerous. In severe cases, meningitis can lead to complications such as brain damage, hearing loss, other disabilities, or even death.

Some forms of meningitis are relatively mild and resolve with supportive care. Others, especially bacterial meningitis, can progress rapidly and become life-threatening within hours if not treated immediately.

While meningitis can affect anyone, certain groups are at higher risk, including infants, young adults, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Types of Meningitis

Symptoms

Early symptoms of meningitis can overlap with more common illnesses like the flu, which can make it difficult to recognize at first. However, meningitis can progress rapidly.

Fever

Light Sensitivity

Seizures

Severe Headache

Vomiting

Joint Pain

Stiff Neck

Rash

Confusion or Fatigue

When to Go to the ER

Symptoms can worsen quickly - do not wait.

  • High fever + Sever Headache + Stiff Neck

  • Confusion or unusual drowsiness

  • Unusual sensitivity to light

  • Seizures

  • Persistant vomiting

  • Rash that doesn't fade when pressed

  • Symptoms rapidly worsening

If you’re unsure, seek medical care immediately. Early treatment can save lives.

How to Prevent Meningitis

Many forms of meningitis are preventable, especially with the right information and protection.

Vaccination

Stay up to date on recommended vaccines—the most effective way to prevent many serious forms of meningitis.

Hygiene

Some types spread through close contact. Handwashing and avoiding shared drinks or utensils can reduce risk.

Awareness

Knowing the signs and acting quickly helps prevent severe outcomes and reduces the risk to others.
